Movie Poster

For my assignment, I chose the movie poster for the movie, “Obsessed,” starring Idris Elba, Beyonce Knowles and Ali Larter. This poster first stood out to me because of the contrast in colors. In the front, you see Beyonce and Idris in all black, with part of the word “obsessed” in white, along with “all’s fair when love is war”. The contrast then continues, as the background of the entire poster is white, with black writing in the word “obsessed” and in the other words including their names. There is also a black outline of the entire poster. Finally the “D” in “obsessed” is white, in contrast with the dark red dress of Ali Larter.

Along with the contrast, this movie poster is also an example of for-ground background. The two main characters played by Beyonce and Idris are in the front and matching, while Ali is in the background. You can tell by the looks on their faces that there is some issue going on between the two women. Because the male is not looking at either of them, you can tell that it is out of his hands. Ali is dressed in red, which is also a color related to war, love, and sex. This Implies that there could be an issue between the three of them having to do with “obsessions”.

I like how the man is not looking at either of them, while the two women are staring each other into the eyes. You can see that there is a lot of tension between both of them, without actually seeing the movie. I also like how the title of the movie is extremely large and centered in the middle of the poster. This really emphasizes the word “Obsessed” which tells a lot about the movie before seeing it. I also like how Beyonce is particularly close to the man in the front. She brings a sense of power to the poster, and it is clear she is trying to show the other girl that she is in control of the situation.

Gatorade Advertisement

When looking through advertisements I came across this one promoting Gatorade. What first caught my attention to this picture was the fact that the girl’s shadow does not match what she is actually doing. In reality, the woman is walking in casual attire in between two strips of buildings. Her shadow is showing her with an athletic build, running on the sidewalk. This commercial wants viewers to believe that if you drink Gatorade, you will be athletic and have all the energy in the world to do whatever you want to do. The shadow is showing what the woman would be if she drank Gatorade.

Also, the entire picture consists of grays, blacks and whites. The Gatorade symbol in the bottom right hand corner is bright orange and green, making it stand out in the dull picture. Although it does stand out because of the color, I think that if it was larger and not so off to the side, there would be a much larger impact on the viewer. Since the advertisement is about Gatorade, I believe making the product label bigger would be more successful.

I also like how this picture shows a linear perspective. The lines in the sidewalk along with the lines from the houses aid in the perspective towards the vanishing point. I like how as you look farther back in the picture, you can slowly see less and less sky. There is also a shadow going almost directly down the center of the picture, and the girl is on the sunny side. The contrast from her black outfit against the bright light makes her stand out. Her shadow also stands out against the bright light. Overall I like this advertisement, and the only thing I would do differently is make the Gatorade sign larger.

Closets

For this project, I took 8 pictures of different peoples closets. I wanted to show different peoples personalities and styles of living. I figured that you can tell a lot about a person from what is in their closet and how clean it is. As you can see, some closets are packed with clothing, bags, and shoes. Some closets have gaps of space where no clothing is occupying them. Some have shelves to organize their things with, and some are extremely neat and lined up with hangers. Every persons closet that I took pictures of was a little different. I would have liked to have more drastic changes in the closets, but it is hard being that all of us have the same space and most of the same things. If I were to take pictures of peoples closets at home, there would have been more of a drastic change in scenery.

Whistler Village

This is a picture of Whistler Village at night, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, taken by Ron Niebrugge. Ron Nienbrugge Vancouver is where the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are being held. Ron Nienbrugge moved to Alaska with his family into the wilderness. His love for the wilderness aided him in his carrier to capture photos of the natural world. His pictures have been in magazines like National Geographic, Sports Illustrated along with Walt Disney World, and the National Park Service. He has his own stock photo agency, Niebrugge Images.

When first looking at this picture, I really like how the bright colors of the various lights jump out at you against the dark, night background. The blues, reds, and oranges really shine through this picture. I like how the yellow lights in the windows of the stores match with the yellow lights in the trees. Also the red lights in the store match with the red lights in the trees. All of these colors are reflected off of the black pavement and the white snow, giving this picture a lot of life, even though there are no people and it is taken at night. This shows there is life at night during such an exciting time like the Winter Olympics. You can tell this picture is taken during the holidays with the red, blue, and green lights all over the town. Also the fact that there is snow on the ground, gives you an idea that it is winter.

I also like how this picture seems to have been taken from the middle of an intersection, so that you can see two sides of the street. It shows that there is not only one building or one side that is decorated for the occasion; there are lights everywhere. This picture reminds me of New York City at night because when you go to Time Square, it does not seem like it is dark out. You fee like it is the middle of the day with the lights illuminating the streets. This picture has the same effect; without looking at the black sky, you would think that it was during the day.

Motion

For this week, I was assigned to take a picture that expressed the word “motion”. For this assignment, I had one of my teammates dribble a soccer ball on Reeves field. You can tell from the slight blurriness of her left foot and right hand that she is in action. I would have liked to get her whole body to be blurry, and have a still background so that the word “motion” would stand out in your head when you looked at the picture, but this is as blurry as I could get it. You can also tell she is moving by looking at her hair, which is moving as she runs by.

Bald Eagle

This is a picture of a Bald Eagle taken by professional photographer, Curt Knaus. When first looking at this picture, I see power and motion. In this photograph, the eagle looks as if it is propelling itself out of the water after catching a fish to eat. It’s spread wings look as if they are larger than its body, portraying the power and strength of the creature. The eagle’s spread wings and body, along with its positioning in the center of the picture, makes it stand out to the viewer immediately. Because the image is large and centered, it supports the idea of power. I really enjoy how the eagle stands out in this picture because of the color choice. The eagle is a distinct color, having a pitch-black body, with a white head and yellow beak. The water in the background of the picture is a dull, grey color, helping the image of the eagle to pop out at you.

I also think that it shows the dominance of the creature in wild, like it is a dominant figure in the photo. Also, when you think of a Bald Eagle, you think of it as being a grand symbol of the United States. This symbol demonstrates the idea of the power and strength of our country, but also the strength the eagle shows in the picture as it moves out of the water.

Along with being a very powerful picture, you see motion in this photo. At the bottom of the eagle’s claws, it appears as if it is picking something up from the water, possibly a fish. The water is splashing upward as the eagle spreads its wings to fly away. The water in the background of the photo is very calm, which is why I like the way the water is dramatically splashing upward, to show the powerful movement upward that the eagle is taking.

Vodka Commercial

In this commercial, the product that is being advertised is Smirnoff vodka. The man who is drinking the Smirnoff looks through the glass bottle on multiple occasions. As he looks through the bottle, he gets a different picture of the thing he is looking at; he gets a picture of what he wants to see, or of what happens when you drink the vodka. For example the first person he looks at is the lady who is getting married. As he puts the bottle to her face the lady seems to turn into a vicious, aggressive, vampire about to bite her soon to be husbands neck. This shows that if not handled responsibly, Smirnoff can turn you into another person. This commercial also implies that drinking Smirnoff can help you to see things that you want to happen or you want to see in a person. For example, when the man looks through the bottle at an angry dinner guest is yelling at the waitress, he then sees the waitress pushing the angry man’s face into his meal.

This commercial also shows what other people want, but will only happen if they drink Smirnoff vodka. Such as when a man is with his wife but is attracted to another woman. His true feelings come out when looking through the bottle. At the end of the commercial when he looks at himself through the glass he sees a monster, expressing what Smirnoff would do to him. This commercial shows that Smirnoff brings out your true colors. The things that the man was looking at stood out to him in a certain way. Whether it be a shiny gold present, or three military men, everything he wanted to see differently was in some way bold compared to everything else happening in the room.

I thought that him looking at things that stood out to him in a way made the commercials point work. This is because he was looking at things that stood out to him or attracted him, and Smirnoff vodka could change that completely. I also liked how in the end it showed him looking at himself in the mirror and how reacted like he was scared. I think that this commercial shows all the bad things that happen when you drink vodka, instead of promoting the product. It leaves me confused as to whether this is really to show people why you shouldn’t drink Smirnoff, or to promote the product, especially in the end when the man looks at himself and sees a monster.
